I recently had a conversation with a friend about communal violence in India. He is from Ahmedabad. I told him how Hyderabad, despite the diversity was safe and how all those terror attacks etc. were things of the past. Well, how wrong I was. Within two weeks of my conversation, two bomb blasts shook Hyderabad killing over 40 people. I am not going to blame the entire Muslim community in Hyderabad, but there are definitely people who are sympathetic to Osama and Al Qaeda and they need to be weeded out of the community. Otherwise, sadly, this is not the last of such events. I’m not really sure that the AP Government is interested in tackling this issue, as much as it is in sweeping it under the carpet. Hopefully, I’m wrong on this one too.

Its a gut wrenching act of terrorism. I wrote about it in my blog from Times of India long back. Every Indian should read: Hyderabad blasts: Thank God it wasn’t me!

God bless Hyderabad. Not just Hyderabad, every place on the Planet Earth where we read/hear news about blastings, suicide bombings etc.,everyday. It appears to me that polar regions are the only safest places to live. I don’t understand or will never in my lifetime what kind of mindset these terrorists have when they think of killing another human. Is it just religion that instigates these kind of acts?

Btw,it was a nice post by Ravi.

Also, I just read on a website that there are a few people in Hyderabad who have posters of Musharaf and Osama in their houses. That’s just shameful to know.

3. ish - August 26, 2007

Sure there are Muslims in part of India who sympathize with Osama and Musharaf but how does one find them out?

It’s sad, these blasts. I read a very touchy article somewhere. Apparently there were many students from an engineering college who had come to Lumbini Park to see the lazer show and many died.

The news people say that the Intelligence Bureau had the information about the blasts and that they had informed the police. How come it happens that the IB always knows something is going to happen and still we’re never able to foil the plans.

“.. I am not going to blame the entire Muslim community in Hyderabad, but there are definitely people who are sympathetic to Osama and Al Qaeda and they need to be weeded out of the community. ..”

I disagree. Being symapthetic to osama and al qaeda is not a crime.
(Not that I am). what is important is to make sure their idea of ‘free speech’ is under check.

In any case I am not sure of relavance of this with blasts. We know for sure al aqeda wasnt behind this…and no one has confirmed role of any islamic organization.

For what we know, it could even be naxals!!

nonetheless…these blasts scares the hell out of that…

Gokul chat bhandar and Lumbini park! two of the most popular locations…fancy that..u go out to have some ‘chat’, and u r dead!

5. planetsk - August 27, 2007

I heard (a few months ago) that Gokul chat was closed for a while due to some quality problems with food. If what I heard was true, then the reopening hadn’t made a big difference.

Whoever be the culprits, these blasts made people feel more insecure and widened the ” Hindu-Muslim ” gap. I am scared of the lunatics who can take this as an opportunity and create more chaotic situations in Hyderabad and different parts of India.

“How come it happens that the IB always knows something is going to happen and still we’re never able to foil the plans.”
– That’s true. I think they are just paid to inform the police aftermath and do nothing.

“Being symapthetic to osama and al qaeda is not a crime.”

It’s not a crime, but the Government has to keep an eye on these people and slowly weed them out. If they go with the attitude that it’s not a crime and do nothing about it, such incidents will take place again and again. These bomb blasts have given the Government an opportunity to tackle this problem and they should make use of it.

Damn! This struck closer to home than I had imagined. It was only yesterday, when I was talking to my dad that I realized that Gokul chaat and Lumbini park were targetted. Lumbini park is about 5 min from my Basheerbagh apartment and Gokul chat was a regular hangout spot for many of us who lived in Hyderabad (not so much for the Sec’badis). It’s sad and despicable that students are being targetted in these attacks. These so-called jihadis are nothing more than cowards in my opinion.
