The Curse of Sourav Ganguly November 29, 2006

Curse?? I did not know what title should I put for blogging about the recent performances of Indian Cricket Team. There are too many holes to be filled in the team before Indians gear up for the world cup. In the first place, batting order is screwed up, except Dravid and Dhoni no one can bat, why the heck do we have Agarkar in the team, bowling was never good. If I go back 3 years when Sourav’s team drew the test series against Aus in Australia and won (tests and ODI’s) against Pak in Pakistan, team then was much better. I haven’t seen good wins since then. Yeah, with Dravid-Chappell combo, there are a few good victories but most of them were in India and against weaker teams. Indians did have a great chance playing in West Indies in conditions similar to the upcoming world cup but it was a nightmare series.

Before WI, there was Pak’s series. I remember in that series Ganguly was made a fool by selectors. The way Ganguly was treated by the board was senseless. He was in and out for no reason. India kept on losing starting from Pak’s series. I agree that he wasnt a good test player. IMO, he’s  a better one-dayer than Dinesh Mongia ( for some reason I hate this guy). There weren’t great wins since Ganguly was ousted from the team both as a captain and player. I am not here to support Ganguly, damage was already made to his career both by himself and selectors.

If one looks at the recent games India played, it’s hard to believe that is this the same team that had a winning streak last year. Hmm…after losing One-Day series in SA..now Ganguly is in contention for the test matches in South Africa. I don’t know on what basis he will be selected. And with a few months to go for world cup and Australia and SA going stronger, chances for India to make it to playoffs ( or Super Six or Eight) are very bleak. I guess things went from bad to worse since 2003 world cup (except Aus and Pak series in 2003-04). If I compare the teams now and then we got a good captain and a keeper and lost Ganguly. So, is this really a curse of Ganguly?? I don’t know..again..I want our team to win matches with our without Ganguly but I dont see it happening..

Planetsk,
I agree with most of your views…especially the fact..
that lot of damage was done off the field to Gnagul’s career by himself and by board politics…Of course other than on-field poor performance by Ganguly but he got a harsh deal on that compared to other underperformers…

I somehow never liked Chappell.., I wont burn his effigy..but I think its time we need Indian coach…

Some of the people whom I talk to say that foreign coach will not be involved in board politics and would be more neutral…
Thats almost suggesting that the very fact that a guy is Indian, he would be biased..

White skin still rules….

2. sk - November 30, 2006

Ganguly was probably a better captain than Dravid. I don’t know. I don’t think Greg Chappell is a bad coach. Indians are losing because our batting is screwed up. Each and every player is out of form. We’ll start winning if in addition to the coach, we get players from Australia too.

“White skin still rules…”
If you’re talking about Australia’s dominance, I agree with you.

3. parmanu - November 30, 2006

“..If you’re talking about Australia’s dominance, I agree with you. ..”

No I am talking abt exactly what i said above that line..though i agree with what u said too..! but abt what I said

If there are people who thinks that a coach is good beacause he is white and an Indian coach can never be good, then we really have problem…
Now its an arguable claim and digressing from the topic, but I do think that he got partial benifit in some incidents of being white..

4. planetsk - November 30, 2006

“….Australia’s dominance”
-Sometimes, I find Australia in Cricket analogous to Federer in Tennis.

“Ganguly was probably a better captain than Dravid”
-Yeah, I agree. Atleast he got winning record against better teams.

During FIFA world cup, one of the commentators said that coaches lose, players win and referees ruin matches. What would apply for cricket?? just players??

5. sk - November 30, 2006

The problem with cricket is that coaches and captains have more control over bowling and field placement than over batting. What can they do if batsmen fail? The great Indian middle order has never looked more vulnerable.

6. shivaji - December 11, 2006

Sourav Ganguly, by far, is the best thing to have happened to Indian Cricket since the time of Tiger Pataudi, both in terms of personal records and as a master stratigist and team leader. No wonder we called them Team India during his time, which is now “MEN IN BLUE” or rather should be “MEN IN BLACK AND BLUE”, thanks to the present team management.
Ganguly’s midas touch worked wonders in the match against the rest of South Africa, which amply proves the kind of confidence juniors imbibe from his presence.
Hence calling Ganguly “A CURSE” is like spitting towards the sky, baseless and mindless stuff, you should try something better…..

“Hence calling Ganguly “A CURSE” is like spitting towards the sky, baseless and mindless stuff, you should try something better…..”

-Dude Shivaji, please read the post once again.. and comment. No where it was mentioned that Ganguly himself is a curse..that makes no sense like your comment.

Don’t know what’s going on with Indian cricket at this time. The same Chappel-Dravid team was doing an awesome job with Dhoni becoming the number 1 batsman in the world. And the very next year they’re doing such an aweful job that it seems they’d even lose to Bangladesh!

If we see the team now,we can’t bowl,we can’t bat and we can’t even field! It’s aweful to see everyone getting injured and then doing an aweful overall job.Things go really bad in the powerplays. If we look around,we don’t have even 1 decent bowler.Irfan Pathan is out of form.Agarkar’s never bowled well.Sreesanth gives away too many runs.Harbhajan’s been going haywire.Only Kumble is okay but we can’t play him till he’s like 60.Where’s all the talent at?

Ganguly,he seemed to be okay in this innings but he still needs to do something about his short ball vulnerability.

The batting lineup is trashed.Sehwag should not be put into the opening.Dravid’s not played well lately either.Only Dhoni is satisfactory.Pathan does well sometime.I don’t understand why VVS Laxman is in the team?!

We very much need Yuvraj and Kaif to come back.

@ish
I liked the way you summarized Indian Team. Yeah, this year, there weren’t any good performances from the team and the sad thing is these screwups are happening before the world cup and worst of all is the way Indians lost matches in SA. I think the whole team should be a case study like Laloo..

Hopefully, new year 2007 fills some enthusiasm in players.

10. ish - December 13, 2006

Exactly. Now that we’re gonna have the 2007 World Cup Final in Mumbai,I just hope we manage to win it on our own land.

11. planetsk - December 13, 2006

@ish,
2011 world cup final to be in Mumbai not 2007.

I guess by 2011 Dravid and Tendulkar will be in the commentary box. May be Yuvraj leading the team.

12. ish - December 13, 2006

sorry,2011 😛

Oh well Dravid still has some years left in him.Yuvraj would be a good captain with the way he’s playing.

Today I was seeing these captaincy stats.Ricky Ponting was the best,Lara the second.Sachin was one of the worst so yeah I’d like to see him sitting there with Navjot Sidhu,by the time he’ll be outta jail too.

13. sk - December 13, 2006

“I guess by 2011 Dravid and Tendulkar will be in the commentary box. May be Yuvraj leading the team.”

And people will still be busy wondering why the Indian team can’t win. Welcome to the future…

14. planetsk - December 13, 2006

“Today I was seeing these captaincy stats.Ricky Ponting was ….”
-Ricky Ponting got his fortune going great since he became a captain..lots of hundreds, big scores, great test wins..hmm….no doubt he’s a great batsman, may be the best in the last 3-4 years..but for some reason..I hate him playing..

15. ish - December 15, 2006

@planetsk
Same here. It’s probably his attitude problem.Actually the whole aussie team has that problem.

@Sk
Haha I’m sure we’d still be wondering why we can’t win.Wonder who’d be the coach then.Atleast we’re doing reasonabely well in Tennis at the Asian Games,Doha. But actually not that well either.Right after Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the gold in Men’s doubles,Mahesh declared that he won’t play with Leander again cause he wasn’t sure of his(Mahesh’s) calibre and had questioned it several times.

Meanwhile Miss Sania, the star managed a silver in women’s singles. She might be happy but we’re not.She should’ve won the damn gold. It’s shocking to see China galloping all the medals.I wonder what they’d do with so many of them.Probably make duplicates and sell ’em.

kuch likhne ka baki rahe geya keya. for those who wants to give up in life….let “dada” be an example to them. long live saurav. u are an indian.

Heads Must Roll ITs time to change

Its time for heads to roll, If chappel did not know about the middle stump guard that ganguly could take what is is a coach for. Why should a bugger like kiran more keep a gritty genius like sourav out of cricket for so many months why we as a nation lost to other countries like westindies australia and South africa.

Return our lost Indian pride return us our so many months of humiliation and return us the happiness of these losses. I demand that from the cricketing eastablishment.

Why should a foreigner be allowed to raise a middle finger at Indians and still no action be taken . Who gives you the authority to humiliate Indians. I demand an answer from crickets administrators.

Why did you humiliate US we demand an answer.

Now Pathan a brilliant guy is melted the same treatment as our beloved dada was. Its a shame if coaches are hired to play politics and not correct flaws and mistakes. Then whats the Coach worth. He is as good as lalit Modi or Suklaji. Why not make fatty Shula or Blackey Mody or Crucked Faced Pawar the Coach.

If Vengsarkar being the chief selector has to do Coaching aswell why should he not be paid a few hudred thousand dollars , just because HE IS AN INDIAN I PRESUME. Chappel is not even carrying drinks we would understand the boys are being served by a white skinned bugger which makes ther drinks worth few thousand dollars then also it would heve given us some solace.

AS RANATUNGA SAID ” We need to respect our heroes ” We need to imbibe that culture.

Its time we get rid of Dravid as a Captain.

Think about it ” Jammy is a Clerk” . Salla Bin Pende Ka Lauta………saala Marega

ITS TIME FOR CHANGE (Kick out Chappel and remove Dravid)

Its time for heads to roll, If chappel did not know about the middle stump guard that ganguly could take what is is a coach for. NOw another player Pathan is being mishandled. If the Coach cant help he should be made to carry drinks and probably Kapil Dev or Gavaskar or Mahinder amarnath should be made the Coach.

Has chairman of selection comittee been delagated the role of Coach. If selection comittee is not doing its job of looking at talent within the country who will do that?

Its time to get rid of chappel and get an indian Coach and change Indian Captain .

19. planetsk - January 9, 2007

My recommendations:
-Make Harsha Bhogle coach for Indian Team
-Veeru should enroll in weight loss program
-Ganguly and Sachin should open the innings in one-day games
-Get Pathan back

tbc..

20. parmanu - January 10, 2007

i agree with planet on all the recos, except the first one..
harsha..??

21. planetsk - January 10, 2007

Yeah 🙂 I wasn’t serious though.

It will be funny to see a person who never played for India, coach the team..he can commentate on Indian cricket along with other cricketers and he’s been doing that for many years..so he can coach too..it seems he had his hand on sacking Ganguly from the team, according to wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harsha_Bhogle

22. parmanu - January 11, 2007

“..It will be funny to see a person who never played for India, coach the team..”
doesnt our current and last coach fit that description?
ha, anyway..i know what u mean..,it wud be indeed fun to see harsha out there..
but i think it wud be great if we have hrithik roshan..the superhero…
with supernatural powers..and thats exactly what we need now..

23. planetsk - January 12, 2007

“..but i think it wud be great if we have hrithik roshan..the superhero…with supernatural powers..and thats exactly what we need now..”

-Yes, Indian Team needs supernatural powers..and our Indian Superman should help the team out…may be win the world cup without even playing…Jadooo..

Anyway, finally Veeru out-Dada in.., good days for India..???

24. navaneeth - February 22, 2007

i hate greg chapell for the way he treated sourav ganguly . i am happy for sourav .he is back with a bang . i hope he wins the player of the series in the world cup

25. Anuj - May 3, 2008

What happened between Ganguly and Warne is the best example I can think of when i see the differences between Indian and Australian cricket. Ive lived in India for about 3 yrs and ive been in Aussie for about 7, and as an indian i think the ipl is a great format for everyone to see what the players are like professionally without the mask of their national team. Ganguly is an arrogant person, and theres is no point in blaming Gregg chapell. Ill agree that the Australians arent always fair and do cry a fair bit but the indians are no better. trying to fly the banner of playing the game in the spirit, both Bhajji and Gabguly have shown exactly how much spirit they really have. Ganguly is a disgrace to cricket, he was good int he past, but his recent actions show what was int he past is gone. Just being good at the game is not enough. Showing up late for the start of the game (and every indian is going to try to defend this by saying its fashionable), to questioning the integrity of Graeme Smith. whats a joke. Im indian and im embarrassed at Sourav and not the least surprised that most of the indians are conveniently forgetting who’s not playing in the spirit of the game now.
